Dynamis vs. Exousia

The Kingdom’s Power vs. Authority: Dynamis vs. Exousia 👑

The New Testament uses two distinct Greek words for “power,” and understanding their difference clarifies how the Kingdom of God operates now versus how it will be fully established upon the Lord’s Return.

1. The Kingdom’s Raw Power: Dynamis (δυˊναμις)

  • Meaning: This refers to raw, inherent strength, capability, or might; it is the potential or ability to act. It is the root of the English word “dynamite.”
  • Theological Focus: Dynamis describes the miraculous, active presence of God’s power operating in the world today.
  • Key New Testament Use: This is the word used for Jesus’s miracles (acts of dynamis) and the power given to the apostles (Acts 1:8: “you will receive dynamis when the Holy Spirit has come upon you”).

Dynamis is the ability to do the supernatural.

2. The Kingdom’s Governing Authority: Exousia (ϵξουσιˊα)

  • Meaning: This refers to lawful, official permission, delegated right, or jurisdiction; it is the authority or right to act.
  • Theological Focus: Exousia describes the absolute, sovereign right to rule that belongs fully to Christ.
  • Key New Testament Use: This is the authority Christ received after the resurrection: “All exousia in heaven and on earth has been given to me” (Matthew 28:18). It is the right to legislate and govern.

Exousia is the right to rule that makes the action legal.

The Eschatological Difference

The Kingdom of God operates in the present age by Power (Dynamis) but not yet in full Authority (Exousia).

  • Now (The Interregnum): We have the Dynamis (miracles, spiritual gifts, Holy Spirit) to save souls and bear witness, but the world is still governed by competing human and demonic authority systems. Christ is spiritually reigning, but His enemies have not been fully put under His feet.
  • The Return (The Consummation): At the Second Coming, the Exousia is fully established. Christ will take up His political, global right to rule, and all competing authorities will be abolished (1 Corinthians 15:24). The Dynamis will then fully serve the established Exousia.

This distinction helps explain the tension between the Kingdom’s spiritual reality and the world’s political chaos. We have the power but are waiting for the full authority to be manifested globally.

The Return Question

If the Kingdom of God currently operates by Dynamis (power) and is waiting for the full manifestation of Exousia (authority), what specific area of your life are you withholding from Christ, preventing Him from fully exercising His spiritual Dynamis now, and waiting for the external pressure of His final Exousia to force obedience?
