Who Was Ahihud?

The name Ahihud, which is interpreted as “Brother of majesty” or “Brother of renown,” appears in the King James Version of the Holy Bible referring to at least two different individuals. Both figures hold a place in the biblical record through their lineage, and one, in particular, was charged with a monumental and foundational task in the history of Israel: the division of the Promised Land.

1. Ahihud, Prince and Divider of the Land

The most historically significant individual bearing this name is Ahihud the son of Shelomi, who was a Prince of the Tribe of Asher. He lived during the critical transition period as the Israelites were preparing to enter and settle in the land of Canaan.

The Task of Inheritance

Ahihud’s primary and most important mention is found in the Book of Numbers, where he is named as one of the leaders chosen by the Lord to assist in the great work of dividing the inheritance among the tribes of Israel:

“And the prince of the tribe of the children of Asher, Ahihud the son of Shelomi.” โ€” Numbers 34:27 (KJV)

This selection places Ahihud among an esteemed commission, which included Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun (Numbers 34:17). This body of men was tasked with ensuring the precise and equitable distribution of the Promised Land, a task foundational to the establishment of the twelve tribes in the land God had sworn to give their fathers.

Ahihud’s role was to represent the tribe of Asher, overseeing their allotment in the fertile northern coastal plain of Canaan. His participation confirms that the inheritance of the land was an ordered, authoritative act, executed by appointed leaders according to divine command.

2. Ahihud, Son of Bela

A second individual named Ahihud is recorded in the genealogical registers of the Tribe of Benjamin, as part of the family of Bela, Benjamin’s eldest son.

“And Naaman, and Ahiah, and Gera, he removed them, and begat Uzza, and Ahihud.” โ€” 1 Chronicles 8:7 (KJV)

In this passage, Ahihud is identified as a descendant of Benjamin, showcasing his place within one of the families that returned from being carried captive and established themselves in the land (as suggested by the context of 1 Chronicles 8). While less detail is provided about this Ahihud, the preservation of his name within the meticulous genealogies confirms his existence and importance within the lineage of the Benjamites.

The presence of both Ahihud, the Prince of Asher, and Ahihud, the son of Bela, serves as a reminder that the Lord of Israel raises up men of renown and authority, from different tribes, to execute His purposesโ€”whether it is administering His laws or maintaining the vital family records that link the generations of His chosen people.
