Who Was Anub?

Anub is a figure whose significance is purely genealogical, preserved in the detailed family records of the tribe of Judah within the Book of Chronicles. His inclusion confirms the continued lineage of the celebrated family of Caleb.

๐Ÿงฌ The Family of Judah

Anub belongs to the family of Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, the faithful spy who was permitted to enter the Promised Land. Anub’s lineage is traced through Hurus (or Hur), a son of Judah whose descendants were particularly associated with the arts and crafts of the Tabernacle and the organization of the city of Bethlehem.

Anub is specifically identified as the son of Coher (or Koz), belonging to the division of the tribe of Judah that settled in the southern territories:

“And Coz begat Anub, and Zobebah, and the families of Aharhel the son of Harum.” (1 Chronicles 4:8, KJV)

In this passage, Anub is listed alongside his brother Zobebah as a descendant of Coz. This record helped establish the ancestral claims of the families that returned to the land after the Babylonian exile.

๐Ÿ‡ Significance of the Name

The name Anub, meaning “grape” or “fruit,” is fitting for a family line established in the rich, agricultural inheritance of Judah. The tribe of Judah was prophesied to be blessed with abundance, particularly in grapes and wine, by Jacob:

“Binding his foal unto the vine, and his assโ€™s colt unto the choice vine; he washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes:” (Genesis 49:11, KJV)

While Anub himself is a minor figure, his place in the genealogy demonstrates the meticulous detail with which the Israelites preserved their family lines. The record ensures that even the most distant branches of the great tribe of Judahโ€”the tribe from which the Messiah was promisedโ€”were documented.
