The Great Falling Away is, at its core, a rebellion against authority, and the front line of this war is found in the home. The Fifth Commandment stands as the guardian of the generational gate: “Honour thy father and thy mother” (Exodus 20:12). This is not a suggestion for a well-ordered society; it is the bedrock of civilization. When the bond of honor between parent and child is severed, the very fabric of reality begins to unravel. We are witnessing a systematic insurrection against the ancient order, where the wisdom of the elders is mocked and the “autonomy” of the youth is idolized. This spirit of matricide and patricide is the smoke rising from the pits of the apostasy, signaling a generation that has been untethered from its roots and left to drift into the arms of the deceiver.
The forensic evidence of our decline is found in the prophetic warning that in the last days, children shall rise up against their parents and cause them to be put to death (Matthew 10:21). While we see this in the physical realm, it is even more prevalent in the spiritual. A culture that encourages children to “divorce” their parents over ideological differences or to view the domestic sphere as a place of oppression is a culture that is being prepared for the Man of Sin. If a man cannot honor the father he has seen, how can he honor the Heavenly Father whom he has not seen? The breakdown of the family is the demolition of the classroom where we first learn the meaning of “Fear God, and keep his commandments” (Ecclesiastes 12:13).
The remnant must be a people who return to the “Ancient Paths.” We must realize that the promise of “long days upon the land” is tied to the humility of submission. To honor our parents is to acknowledge that we are part of a lineage of faith that precedes us and a Kingdom that transcends us. In an age of “perilous times” marked by disobedience and unthankfulness, the Christian household must be a fortress of honor. We must resist the siren song of a world that tells us to “carve our own path” by tramping over the graves of our fathers. The King is at the door, and He will find a people who have learned to bow the knee at home before they attempt to stand for the Truth in the gate.
