To understand the Ordo Templi Orientis, one must look beneath the surface to the soil from which it sprang: Freemasonry. The O.T.O. was not a spontaneous creation but was originally envisioned by its founders, Carl Kellner and Theodor Reuss, as a “Masonic Academy” that would unify the various high degrees of European Masonry.
While modern blue-lodge Masonry often presents a face of civic virtue, the O.T.O. represents the “unveiled” progression of those same esoteric principles. It is the transition from the Square and Compass to the Hexagram of Thelema.
The Ritualistic Cord
The connection is not merely historical; it is structural. The O.T.O. adopted the grade system of the Rites of Memphis and Misraïm, which are themselves high-degree Masonic systems. They utilize the same language of “initiation,” “clandestine lodges,” and “sacred secrets.” However, where the Mason might stop at a generic “Great Architect,” the O.T.O. initiate is led directly into the worship of the self and the “aeon” of Horus.
As it is written in 2 Corinthians 11:14:
“And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.”
The Great Counterfeit of the Temple
Both organizations claim a lineage tied to the Knights Templar (hence Templi in O.T.O.). This is a strategic attempt to hijack the history of Christendom and the Temple of Solomon for a gnostic agenda. They seek to rebuild a temple of man’s making, while the Scripture tells us that the true Temple is the body of the believer, bought with a price.
A Shared Silence
The most damning link between the Lodge and the O.T.O. is the Oath of Secrecy. Both require the initiate to swear blood oaths—often involving gruesome symbolic penalties—to keep “mysteries” hidden from the uninitiated. This stands in direct defiance of the example set by our Lord Jesus Christ.

“Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.” — John 18:20
Modern Idolatry: The “Universal” Religion
The O.T.O. and the Masonic Lodge both promote a “universal” religion that claims to sit above the “sectarian” truth of the Bible. This is the blueprint for the Great Falling Away. By creating a platform where the King James Bible is just one of many “Volumes of the Sacred Law,” they strip the Word of its authority and prepare the world for a global system of worship that excludes the exclusive claims of Christ.
The Masonic Lodge is the porch, and the O.T.O. is one of the many dark rooms within the house of the “god of this world.” Both lead the soul away from the simplicity of Christ and into the labyrinth of human works and demonic “enlightenment.” In our Defence of the Truth, we must recognize that the “light” offered in the lodge or the temple of the orient is but a darkness that blinds the soul to the Lord’s Return.
