Progressive: A Lexicon of Deception Entry

The term “Progressive” is the standard-bearer for the modern spirit of the age, implying a forward-moving journey toward a more enlightened, equitable, and advanced society. It suggests that truth is not a fixed anchor but a moving target—one that must evolve as human understanding “matures.” To the world, being progressive is a mark of intellectual and moral superiority, yet when brought into the forensic light of the Bible, we find that this “progress” is actually a departure. It is the steady, rhythmic march away from the Ancient Paths. The scripture provides the definitive verdict on such movement: “Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God” (2 John 1:9). In the Greek, the word for “transgresseth” literally means to go forward or to advance beyond the set limit. Biblical “progress” is found only in growing deeper into the truth already delivered, not in moving beyond it.

The deception of the progressive movement lies in its rebranding of rebellion as “refinement.” It treats the timeless commands of God as “primitive” artifacts of a bygone era that must be updated for the modern man. This “Noise” suggests that the Holy Ghost failed to speak clearly in the past and that we are only now achieving true moral clarity. This is a direct assault on the sufficiency and preservation of the Word of God. We are warned by the prophet: “Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls” (Jeremiah 6:16). The progressive spirit answers as the rebels of old: “We will not walk therein.” It replaces the “blessed hope” of the Lord’s Return with a carnal hope in human-led evolution and social perfection.

As the Watchman surveys the final hour, he sees that “Progressive” is the title of the trail that leads directly into the Great Falling Away. It is a movement that is ever learning but never able to come to the knowledge of the truth, because it has rejected the very foundation of truth. The Remnant must recognize that we are not called to be “progressive” in our theology, but to “earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints” (Jude 1:3). We do not seek a faith that changes with the seasons; we seek the “Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning” (James 1:17). In a world obsessed with moving forward into darkness, the most radical act of the believer is to stand perfectly still upon the Rock of Ages.
