Who Was Imrah?

The strength of the tribe of Asher was found in its “choice and mighty men of valour,” individuals who were selected for their physical obedience and their uncompromised mission in the defense of the truth. Within this lineage of northern warriors, the sacred record preserves the name of Imrah. He is identified as a son of Zophah and a prince of his people in the genealogical archives of 1 Chronicles 7:36: “The sons of Zophah; Suah, and Harnepher, and Shual, and Beri, and Imrah.”

The name Imrah, meaning “a rebel” or “bitter,” may suggest a man born during a season of national trial or one who possessed a fierce, independent spirit required to hold the northern borders of Israel. As a descendant of Zophah, Imrah belonged to a family that was “chief of the princes” and numbered among the elite soldiers of the kingdom. To be listed in this chronicle is to be recognized as a pillar of the tribal structure, a man who ensured that the “Ancient Paths” of Asher were maintained despite the cultural pressures of the surrounding Phoenician and Canaanite influences.

Imrah lived as a witness to the fruitfulness and military readiness of his tribe. The men of Asher were noted for being “apt to the war and to battle,” and as a head of his house, Imrah was responsible for the spiritual and tactical discipline of his clan. He stood fast in his lot, proving that the security of the nation depended on the vigilance of every tribal prince. His inclusion in the “Faith Forensic Files” of Israel serves as a firm theological reminder that the Lord keeps a meticulous account of those who provide the structural integrity for His people, even those whose specific exploits are not detailed in the narrative.

The legacy of Imrah is one of quiet, steadfast service within the framework of the covenant. He was a man of the “Right Hand,” contributing to the collective strength of a tribe that was blessed to “dip his foot in oil.” His name remains in the Bible as a testimony to the fact that every son of the promise has a station to defend and a lineage to preserve. We find the essence of this duty reflected in the Bible: “Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life” (Revelation 2:10). Imrah was faithful in his generation, a soldier-prince in the long history of the defense of the truth.
