Who Was Israel?

In the “Forensic Analysis” of the covenant, the name Israel represents the ultimate transformation of a man and the birth of a nation. It is a name that signifies a “Prophetic Hotspot,” marking the transition from the “Ancient Paths” of the patriarchs to the uncompromised mission of a chosen people.

The Man: A Prince with God

The name was first bestowed upon Jacob, the son of Isaac, following a night of physical obedience and spiritual struggle at the ford Jabbok. Having spent his life as a “supplanter,” Jacob encountered a divine Messenger and refused to let go until he received a blessing. Genesis 32:28 records the “Verdict” of that struggle: “And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.”

The name Israel, meaning “Prince with God” or “He will strive with God,” redefined Jacob’s identity. No longer was he the man of deception; he became a man of structural integrity, a witness to the “Imminency Project” of the coming Kingdom. This name change was later confirmed at Bethel (Genesis 35:10), establishing Israel as the father of the twelve tribes who would carry the “Defense of the Truth” through the centuries.

The Nation: A Peculiar Treasure

As a collective identity, Israel refers to the descendants of the twelve sons of Jacob. In the “Forensic Analysis” of the Exodus, the Lord identified the nation as His “firstborn son” (Exodus 4:22). Under the leadership of Moses and Joshua, Israel was tasked with an uncompromised mission: to be a “kingdom of priests, and an holy nation” (Exodus 19:6). Their history serves as an “Apostasy Audit” for all humanity, documenting the catastrophic results of “Modern Idolatry” and the “Great Falling Away,” yet always pointing back to the “Ancient Paths” of the Law and the Prophets.

The Divided Kingdom and the Remnant

Following the reign of Solomon, the nation experienced a structural fracture. The ten northern tribes retained the name “Israel,” while the southern tribes became “Judah.” The northern kingdom often serves as a “Midnight Cry” of warning in the KJV, as they quickly abandoned the “Ancient Paths” for the golden calves of Dan and Bethel. Yet, the “Prophetic Hotspot” of the scriptures looks forward to a day of restoration, where the “stick of Joseph” and the “stick of Judah” shall become one in the hand of the Lord (Ezekiel 37:19).

The inclusion of Israel in the “Faith Forensic Files” is a firm theological reminder that the Lord is the “God of Israel” forever. From the struggle of a lone man in the dirt of Jabbok to the “Blessed Hope” of the restoration of all things, Israel remains the centerpiece of the Lord’s “Imminency Project.” We find the weight of this eternal covenant in the Bible: “And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob” (Romans 11:26).
