Who Was Jahzeiah?

In the days of Ezra’s reformation, Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah was one of the few men specifically named in a position of oversight regarding the matter of the “strange wives.” While the nation was in a state of deep repentance and separation, Jahzeiah was “employed about this matter.” He was a man tasked with the “Forensic Audit” of the congregation, ensuring that the separation from the world was carried out according to the law. He represents the administrative hand of the “Defence of the Truth,” proving that the work of restoration requires both the heart of the prophet and the eye of the auditor.

“Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah were employed about this matter: and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them.” (Ezra 10:15)
