Who Was Kedemah?

In the sacred genealogy of the patriarchs, we find the account of the sons of Ishmael, the firstborn of Abraham. Among these twelve princes, according to their nations, stands Kedemah. He was the youngest of the twelve sons, yet his inclusion in the divine record serves as a testament to the fulfillment of God’s promise to make of Ishmael a great nation. We read in the scriptures, “And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam, And Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa, Hadar, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah” (Genesis 25:13-15).

The life of Kedemah is one characterized by the preservation of a lineage under the sovereign hand of the Almighty. Though he was not the heir of the covenant promise given to Isaac, he was nevertheless a recipient of the providential care promised to his father. His name, often associated with “eastward” or “ancient,” points us to the geographical and historical reality of the tribes that would inhabit the desert regions. As it is written, “These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns, and by their castles; twelve princes according to their nations” (Genesis 25:16).

In examining the history of such men, we are reminded that every name recorded by the Holy Spirit holds a place in the vast tapestry of God’s unfolding plan for the ages. Kedemah stood as a prince and a father of a people, maintaining his station in the wilderness. His presence in the biblical text rebukes the modern tendency to overlook the “lesser” names of history, for even the youngest of Ishmael’s sons was counted and known by the Creator. We look back upon his life with an admiring eye for the order and structure God established among the nations of the earth.
