The Devil’s Playground: The Fraud of the Familiar

When the carnal mind encounters the unexplainable, its first instinct is to build a bridge of excuses. We see a shadow move or hear a voice in an empty room, and because the truth of spiritual warfare is too heavy to bear, we invent the myth of the “ghost.” We tell ourselves that it is just a “restless soul” or a “memory in the stone.” But as the old saying goes, “If you play with the devil, expect to get burned.” There are no “accidental” encounters in the dark; there is only the bait and the trap. The world of mediums, palm readers, and seers is a theatre of lies designed to make the forbidden look like a curiosity.

The medium sits in a darkened room, using “cold reading” and the manipulation of grief to convince the brokenhearted that they are speaking to the dead. They are fakes, yes—merely men and women using “profane and vain babblings” (1 Timothy 6:20) to profit from pain. But behind their cheap tricks lies a more sinister fraud. Even when the medium is “real”—when they actually possess knowledge they shouldn’t have—they are not tapping into a gift from God. They are being fed information by spirits that have watched your family for generations. They know your grandmother’s favorite song and your father’s middle name because they were there, lurking in the shadows, waiting for someone to “play” with them so they could move in for the burn.

We use these “seers” as an excuse to avoid the sovereignty of God. We want to know the future because we do not trust the One who holds it. We want to talk to the dead because we do not believe the One who conquered death. But the scripture warns that this curiosity is a defilement. “And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?” (Isaiah 8:19). To turn to a palm reader is to say that the lines on your hand have more authority than the scars on the hands of Christ. It is a carnal attempt to gain control, and it always leads to a fire you cannot put out.

The “ghost” of a loved one is the ultimate gaslight. It uses our most sacred memories as a weapon against our faith. We must stop giving “the devil place” (Ephesians 4:27) by entertaining these fantasies. Every séance, every “harmless” psychic reading, and every ghost hunt is an invitation for a squatter to take up residence in your soul. The carnal mind wants a mystery it can manage, but the Spirit demands a Truth we must obey. Do not be deceived by the velvet curtains and the soothing voices of the “spirit guides.” They are but masks for the same ancient dragon that has been lying since the Garden. Stand back from the fire, for the King is at the door, and His light leaves no room for the shadows of the deceiver.
