A Forensic Study of Prophetic Foundations

Part I: The Chronological Skeleton of Gentile Dominion

The foundation of all biblical eschatology rests upon the structural framework provided to the prophet Daniel while in Babylonian captivity. To understand the “unsealing” found in the Revelation of Jesus Christ, one must first master the “sealed” chronological map of human history. This study examines the literal and symbolic architecture of world empires as a prerequisite for identifying the signs of the Lord’s Return.

Section 1.1: The Metallic Image (Daniel 2)

The first layer of our chronological skeleton is the dream of Nebuchadnezzar, which Daniel alone could interpret through divine revelation. This image represents the “times of the Gentiles”—the period wherein earthly power is held by human kingdoms rather than the direct Davidic reign in Jerusalem.

  • The Head of Gold (Babylon): Representing the absolute autocracy of Nebuchadnezzar.
  • The Breast and Arms of Silver (Medo-Persia): A kingdom inferior in “quality” (unity) but greater in reach.
  • The Belly and Thighs of Brass (Grecia): The swift, far-reaching dominion characterized by the Greek influence.
  • The Legs of Iron (Rome): A kingdom of unprecedented strength that “breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things.” (Daniel 2:40).
  • The Feet of Iron and Clay: A final, fragmented stage of world power characterized by a “miry” mixture of strength and weakness, representing the geopolitical climate immediately preceding the Return.

Section 1.2: The Shift from Mineral to Monster (Daniel 7)

While Chapter 2 views the history of man from a human perspective (glittering, valuable metal), Chapter 7 provides the divine perspective. Here, the same four empires are seen as predatory “beasts” rising from the sea of humanity.

“These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth.” (Daniel 7:17).

The transition from the “iron legs” of Rome to the “fourth beast” is the critical forensic link to the book of Revelation. This beast is “diverse from all the others” and possesses “ten horns,” a detail that remains dormant in Daniel’s account but becomes the central focus of John’s vision on Patmos.

Section 1.3: The Forensic Conclusion of Part I

The “times of the Gentiles” follow a trajectory of physical and moral de-evolution—moving from gold to clay, and from order to beastly chaos. The “Verdict” of this first study is clear: human government is not evolving toward a utopia; it is deteriorating toward a point of collapse that only the “Stone cut out without hands” can resolve.

  • Key Scripture for Meditation: “And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.” (Daniel 2:44).
