A Forensic Study of Prophetic Foundations Part 2

Part II: The Character of the Adversary

In this second phase of our study, we move from the chronological skeleton to the forensic profiling of the final enemy of the faith. The scriptures do not leave the believer in darkness regarding the nature of the “Man of Sin.” By overlaying the “Little Horn” seen by Daniel with the “Beast” witnessed by John, we find a perfect match in both political trajectory and spiritual rebellion. This is not a study of two different men, but of one spirit that has worked through the ages, reaching its zenith in the final hour.

Section 2.1: The Political Rise to Hegemony

The forensic evidence shows that this figure does not emerge from a vacuum, but grows out of the wreckage of the fourth (Roman) empire.

  • The Diverse Horn: Daniel observes a “little horn” coming up among the ten, which plucks up three of the previous horns by the roots (Daniel 7:8).
  • The Global Coalition: John sees the Beast rising with ten horns, upon which are ten crowns, signifying a centralized authority that receives its power from a multi-national coalition (Revelation 13:1).
  • The Path to Power: He gains his position through “flatteries” and “peaceably” initially (Daniel 11:21), though he eventually rules with the iron-like strength inherited from the fourth beast.

Section 2.2: The Blasphemous Mouth

The primary identifier of the Adversary is not his physical appearance—which is often kept in shadow or silhouette—but his speech. He is defined by his war of words against the Creator.

  • Speaking Great Things: Daniel notes that this horn had “a mouth speaking great things” (Daniel 7:8).
  • The Target of Blasphemy: John expands on this, stating the Beast “opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven” (Revelation 13:6).
  • The Challenge to Divine Law: He shall “think to change times and laws” (Daniel 7:25), attempting to overwrite the established decrees of the King with his own modern idolatry.

Section 2.3: The Forensic Profile

When comparing the two profits’ accounts, we see the following matching traits:

The Verdict

The Adversary’s rise is characterized by a deceptive peace followed by a total war of words and actions against the “Defence of the Truth”. He seeks to own the terminology of the age, establishing a “signal” of rebellion amidst the “noise” of a falling-away world. He is the ultimate counterfeit to the King who is at the door.
