The Attributes of God

A Glimpse into the Nature of God

Omniscience

Definition: God is all-knowing. He has perfect knowledge of everything—the past, present, and future. He knows all thoughts, actions, and events, both seen and unseen.

“You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely.” – Psalm 139:2-4

Omnipotence

Definition: God is all-powerful. His power is limitless, and there is nothing He cannot do that is consistent with His nature. This includes the power to create, sustain, and govern all things.

“Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.” – Jeremiah 32:17

Omnipresence

Definition: God is present everywhere at all times. He is not limited by space or time, and no one can flee from His presence.

“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.” – Psalm 139:7-8

Immutability

Definition: God is unchanging. His character, nature, and purposes remain the same throughout eternity. He is completely dependable and consistent.

“I am the Lord, and I do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.” – Malachi 3:6

Sovereignty

Definition: God is in complete and supreme control over all things. He rules over His creation, and nothing happens without His ultimate permission or purpose.

“The Lord has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all.” – Psalm 103:19

Holiness

Definition: God is set apart from all sin and evil. He is absolutely pure and righteous, and His moral character is without blemish.

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.” – Revelation 4:8

Righteousness and Justice

Definition: God is morally perfect in all His actions. His justice ensures that all wrongs are made right, and His righteousness is the standard by which all things are judged.

“The Lord is righteous in all his ways and faithful in all he does.” – Psalm 145:17

Love

Definition: God is the source of all love. His love is unconditional, sacrificial, and foundational to His nature. It is the driving force behind His actions toward humanity.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16

Grace

Definition: God’s unmerited favor. Grace is Him giving us what we don’t deserve. It is the generous and undeserved kindness of God shown to sinners.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” – Ephesians 2:8

Mercy

Definition: God’s compassion for the miserable. Mercy is Him not giving us what we do deserve. It is His tenderness and compassion toward the needy and helpless.

“The Lord is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.” – Psalm 103:8

Faithfulness

Definition: God’s complete trustworthiness. His promises are true and His word is reliable. He never abandons His people or fails to fulfill His purpose.

“If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.” – 2 Timothy 2:13
