Mehuman was one of the seven principal chamberlains, or eunuchs, who served in the royal court of King Ahasuerus (historically identified as Xerxes I) during the Babylonian captivity of Israel. Based in Shushan the palace, Mehuman and his six colleagues occupied a position of immense personal trust, handling the intimate logistics of the royal household, guarding the king’s private chambers, and executing the immediate, personal commands of the monarch.
Mehuman lived during a critical turning point in biblical history, when the providential hand of God was silently shifting the political pieces of the Persian Empire to protect the exiled Jewish remnant. His name appears specifically during the infamous, seven-day royal feast hosted by King Ahasuerus for all the princes and servants of the 127 provinces stretching from India to Ethiopia.
On the final day of the banquet, when the king’s heart was merry with wine, he issued a direct command to Mehuman and his fellow chamberlains to bring Queen Vashti before the assembly to showcase her beauty. The King James Bible preserves the exact administrative record of Mehuman’s identity and assignment:
“On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the seven chamberlains that served in the presence of Ahasuerus the king, To bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal, to shew the people and the princes her beauty: for she was fair to look on.” (Esther 1:10-11)
When Queen Vashti refused to obey this command, it was Mehuman and his elite circle who witnessed the breakdown of imperial order, leading directly to the royal decree that deposed Vashti and opened the way for an orphaned Jewish maiden named Esther to ascend the throne of Persia.
Though Mehuman was a pagan official operating within a worldly, secular court, his inclusion in the sacred text underscores an unshakeable theological truth: the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men. Mehuman’s daily service to King Ahasuerus was entirely managed by the sovereign counsel of God, ensuring that even the domestic commands of a Persian emperor would ultimately work together for the preservation of the people of God and the fulfillment of His prophetic timeline, which moves forward without compromise until the final Day of the Lord.
