Who Was Merari?

Merari, Son of Levi (The Patriarch of the Foundation)

The primary and most renowned Merari was the third and youngest son of the patriarch Levi, born in the land of Canaan before the sons of Jacob went down into Egypt (Genesis 46:11). He became the ancestral father of the Merarites, one of the three great divisions of the Levitical priesthood alongside the families of Gershon and Kohath.

When Israel was organized in the wilderness under Moses, the Merarites were given a highly specific, heavy, and rugged operational mandate. While the Kohathites carried the holy vessels and the Gershonites carried the soft curtains and coverings, the sons of Merari were charged with the transport and assembly of the structural framework of the Tabernacle:

“And under the custody and charge of the sons of Merari shall be the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and the sockets thereof, and all the vessels thereof, and all that serveth thereto,” (Numbers 3:36, KJV)

They were the builders, the heavy-lifters, and the anchors of the sanctuary. To accomplish this grueling physical task, Moses assigned them four wagons and eight oxen under the direct oversight of Ithamar, the son of Aaron (Numbers 7:8). Every time Israel moved, the Merarites had to dismantle, pack, haul, and re-erect the massive wooden boards, the silver sockets, and the heavy pillars of the court. If their work was flawed, the entire sanctuary lacked a true, level foundation.

Centuries later, when King Solomon built the permanent temple and the wilderness wanderings ceased, the sons of Merari transitioned their physical strength into musical mastery and sanctuary security. Under David, leaders like Ethan and Jeduthun arose from the line of Merari to lead the prophetic ministry of praise and thanksgiving before the ark of the covenant (1 Chronicles 6:44-47, 1 Chronicles 25:1-3).

Merari, Father of Judith (The Ancestor of Deliverance)

The second Merari is preserved in the historical records of the Apocrypha, specifically within the lineage of the heroic deliverer Judith. This Merari was the son of Ox, the grandson of Joseph, and a descendant of Israel through the tribe of Simeon (Judith 8:1). He lived as a noble elder in Israel, passing down a heritage of fierce devotion to the law of God that ultimately culminated in his daughter’s courageous stand against the invading Assyrian forces under Holofernes.
