The Levitical Musician of the Wall Dedication
Milalai was a Levitical musician who participated in the historic dedication of the rebuilt walls of Jerusalem under the leadership of Governor Nehemiah and Ezra the scribe.
Following decades of exile, the completion of the city’s physical defenses was a massive milestone for the remnant. To celebrate this deliverance, Nehemiah organized two immense companies of thanksgiving and music to walk atop the newly constructed walls.
Milalai was chosen to be part of the first company, which marched along the southern wall toward the Dung Gate and the Fountain Gate, eventually ascending the stairs of the City of David. He carried the historic musical instruments of King David, keeping the ancient liturgical traditions alive.
The King James Version records his exact position in the procession in Nehemiah 12:36: “And his brethren, Shemaiah, and Azarael, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethaneel, and Judah, Hanani, with the musical instruments of David the man of God, and Ezra the scribe before them.”
Milalai’s role required exact physical coordination and spiritual reverence. Walking directly behind Ezra the scribe, his music echoed off the stones of the restored city, serving as a loud, public declaration to the surrounding hostile nations that the Lord had restored His people and established their security.
