Welcome to our resource on ancient biblical food. This section provides a foundational understanding of the dietary laws established in the Old Testament, which determined what was considered “clean” and “unclean” to eat. These guidelines, primarily detailed in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14, were more than just a list of do’s and don’ts; they were a central part of the ancient Israelite covenant with God. The purpose of these laws was not merely about health or hygiene, but about holiness—setting the people of Israel apart and distinguishing them from surrounding nations.
Understanding these dietary rules is key to exploring ancient biblical recipes and ingredients. The foods consumed by the Israelites were a reflection of their faith and identity, and this list serves as a guide to the ingredients that would have been available and permissible in a truly biblical kitchen.
