Answers to Questions: What is Prophecy?

•

To understand the nature of prophecy, one must first cast aside the worldly notion that it is merely the work of a clairvoyant or a simple prognosticator of future events. True prophecy is the authoritative declaration of the mind and will of God, delivered by chosen vessels who spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. It is the “sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place” (2 Peter 1:19). This divine utterance serves not to satisfy human curiosity about tomorrow, but to vindicate the sovereignty of the Almighty and to call a rebellious creation back to its Creator. It is the absolute demonstration of God’s omniscience, for He alone can declare “the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done” (Isaiah 46:10).

The office of the prophet was never one of comfort or social prestige; it was a burden of fire. When the Word of the Lord came, it often arrived as a sword to pierce the conscience of kings and the complacency of the people. Prophecy is the forensic application of God’s Law to the current age, standing as a bulwark against the shifting sands of cultural apostasy. It demands physical obedience and a heart set toward the New Jerusalem. Whether it be the forthtelling of righteousness or the foretelling of judgment, the testimony of Jesus is the very spirit of prophecy. It reveals a God who is not distant or silent, but one who intervenes in the chronicles of men to ensure that His counsel shall stand. We must look upon the prophetic word with holy awe, recognizing that “the heaven and the earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away” (Luke 21:33).

In an age of profound deception and spiritual slumber, the prophetic scriptures remain our only infallible compass. They provide the “Forensic Analysis” of history, proving that every jot and tittle of the Divine decree will find its fulfillment in due season. To study prophecy is to look into the very heart of the King, discerning the signs of the times not with fear, but with the steady resolve of those who know their redemption draweth nigh. It is a call to stand fast, unmovable, in the truth that has been delivered once for all unto the saints. As the shadows lengthen and the world hastens toward its appointed end, the light of prophecy burns brighter still, anchoring the soul in the absolute certainty of the coming Kingdom.

Do you find that the modern world’s obsession with “predicting” the future has blinded the church to the primary purpose of prophecy, which is a call to repentance and holiness?
