In the high towers of military planning during the early 1960s, a plan was birthed that serves as perhaps the most chilling evidence of the depravity of the natural man when divorced from the fear of God. Operation Northwoods was a proposed series of false-flag operations, drafted by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which called for the staging of terrorist acts against American citizens to justify a war. It is a haunting realization that those sworn to protect the innocent could contemplate their destruction for a political end, proving that “their feet are swift to shed blood: Destruction and misery are in their ways” (Romans 3:15-16).
This memorandum of malice was signed by the highest military authorities of the day, including Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Lyman Lemnitzer. However, the legacy of this deception touches many who carry the names of those who either stood in the halls of power or later brought these secrets to the light of day. We find individuals such as Joseph Califano, who served as special assistant to the Secretary of Defense during that era, and Joseph Wright, whose later roles in government administration placed them within the vast machinery of the state. These men, bearing the name of the patriarch who was himself a victim of a conspiracy by his own brethren, remind us that the spirit of the world often seeks to sacrifice the individual for the sake of the “system.”
The proposals within Northwoods were nothing short of demonic: the sinking of boats carrying refugees, the bombing of American cities, and the hijacking of aircraft. Each act was to be blamed on a foreign adversary to whip the populace into a frenzy of patriotic fervor. Though the plan was ultimately rejected by the executive branch, its mere existence exposes the reality that “the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live” (Ecclesiastes 9:3). It reveals a mindset that views the lives of the “remnant” as mere pawns in a global game of chess.
As students of the Word, we recognize that the true “Defence of the Truth” requires us to be as wise as serpents and as harmless as doves. Operation Northwoods remained classified for decades, hidden from the very people it targeted, until it was finally forced into the light. This confirms the biblical warning that we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers in high places. We are commanded to “have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them” (Ephesians 5:11).
The unmasking of Operation Northwoods is a clarion call for the believer to remain anchored in the Bible. While the documents of men may be redacted, forged, or hidden in vaults, the Word of God is “settled in heaven” (Psalm 119:89) and accessible to all who seek it in spirit and in truth. We do not fear the conspiracies of the shadow-state, for we know that the King is at the door, and He shall bring to light the hidden things of darkness. We stand fast, watching for that blessed hope, knowing that the only kingdom that shall never deceive is the one presided over by the Prince of Peace.
