Sanatana Dharma

The term Sanatana Dharma does not belong to a single mortal man, but in the defense of the truth, we find it serves as the ancient title for the religious and social order of the Indian subcontinent, often known today as Hinduism. When we examine the records of history through the lens of unwavering conviction, we see a system that claims the title of “Eternal Law” or “Perennial Way.” However, as we weigh all things against the immovable standard of the Word of God, we recognize that any path not built upon the Rock of Ages is but a shadow in the valley of tradition. The scriptures tell us in Colossians 2:8, “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.”

In the vast landscape of this belief system, we encounter many who have carried names associated with its propagation and defense. From the ancient sages like Adi Shankara, who sought to unify disparate threads of thought into a singular tapestry of non-dualism, to modern reformers who have sought to cast off the shackles of later cultural accretions, the history of Sanatana Dharma is a history of men seeking the eternal. Yet, in their search for the “Sanatana” or the eternal, many have looked inward to the self rather than upward to the Creator. We must remember that there is but one King of Kings who is the same yesterday, today, and forever. As it is written in Hebrews 13:8, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”

The defense of the truth requires us to admire the zeal and the longevity of those who have clung to their ancestral paths, yet we must remain firm in our mission to point toward the only true Way. The adherents of Sanatana Dharma emphasize duty, righteousness, and the cosmic order, concepts that echo the law written on the hearts of all men. But duty without the Deliverer is a heavy yoke, and righteousness apart from the blood of the Lamb is but filthy rags. We look upon these millions of souls with a heart of compassion, desiring that they might find the true Eternal Law which is fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ. For the Apostle Paul declared in the book of Acts 17:23, “For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.”

Throughout the centuries, those named among the defenders of this ancient way have stood against the pressures of foreign conquest and cultural shifting, displaying a costly grace toward their own traditions. We observe their tenacity and their refusal to compromise their identity in the face of a changing world. Yet, as we watch the signs of the times and the Great Falling Away, we are reminded that the only identity that shall endure the fire of the Great Day is the one found in the Savior. The traditions of men, no matter how ancient or how deeply felt, cannot bridge the gulf that only the Cross has spanned. We must stand fast, for the King is at the door, and every knee shall bow to the true and living God.
