The Lords Return: The Midnight Cry and the Blessed Hope

•

The horizon of human history grows dark, yet for the watchful servant, the deepening shadows are but a precursor to the dawning of an eternal day. We find ourselves in a season where the world hurries toward its own devices, oblivious to the divine ticking of the prophetic clock, yet the soul anchored in truth understands that the Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness. There is a profound, holy beauty in the anticipation of His appearing—a conviction that transcends mere academic study and enters the realm of a living, breathing hope. As the apostle Paul wrote to Titus, we are to be found looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ (Titus 2:13). This expectation is not a passive waiting but a firm, theological stance against the apathy of the age, a refusal to let the lamp of faith grow dim while the Bridegroom tarries.

To live in light of the Lord’s return is to walk with a distinct gait, one marked by a rejection of worldly entanglements and a singular devotion to the King’s business. The scoffers of this present world may demand to know the sign of His coming, pointing to the constancy of the heavens and the earth, but the faithful student of the Word remembers that the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment. We do not fear this transition; we admire the righteousness of it. There is an undeniable majesty in the thought of the heavens departing as a scroll when it is rolled together, for it signals the end of sin’s long night. We must occupy until He comes, standing as sentinels upon the walls, for the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first (1 Thessalonians 4:16).

This firm expectation demands a life of uncompromised holiness and a defense of the truth that remains unshaken by the shifting winds of modern culture. If we truly believe the King is at the door, our priorities must reflect that imminence. It is a costly grace that calls us to watch and pray, lest we be found sleeping when the master of the house returneth. The glory of that coming day will far outweigh the trials of this present time, and our eyes shall finally behold the One who was pierced for our transgressions. We look upward with a joyful awe, knowing that our redemption draweth nigh and that the reign of the Prince of Peace is the only remedy for a broken world. Let us therefore gird up the loins of our mind and be sober, for when Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory (Colossians 3:4).

As the signs of the times multiply around us, are you finding your heart more anchored in the fleeting comforts of this world or in the glorious certainty of His soon return?
