Wednesday (Nisan 14)
The true Passover Lamb is slain. Jesus is crucified at the 9th hour (3:00 PM) and placed in the tomb before sunset. As the sun sets, the first “night” begins.
“For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” (Matthew 12:40, KJV)Thursday (Nisan 15)
The First Day of Unleavened Bread. A special High Day Sabbath where no work was permitted. Jesus remains in the heart of the earth.
[Day 1 / Night 1]
Friday (Nisan 16)
The High Sabbath has passed. The women buy and prepare spices. This workday sits between the two Sabbaths of the Passion week.
[Day 2 / Night 2]
Saturday (Nisan 17)
The weekly Sabbath. The women rest. As the 72-hour mark is reached before sunset, the King rises. He is Lord of the Sabbath.
[Day 3 / Night 3]
Sunday (Nisan 18)
The tomb is found empty while it was yet dark. He had already risen as the Sabbath was drawing to a close. The first day is the day of discovery, not the day of resurrection.
“The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark… and seeth the stone taken away.” (John 20:1, KJV)
