The Smiling Shepherd and the Silent Gospel

When the eyes of the world turned to Houston on February 11, 2024, they weren’t looking for a “best life now” seminar. They were looking for an answer to a tragedy. A woman had entered Lakewood Church with a rifle and a child, opening fire in the halls of what was once a sports arena. In the aftermath, with news cameras from every major network surrounding the man at the podium, the world witnessed a performance that was as chilling as it was revealing.

The Grin in the Midst of Grief

As Joel Osteen stood before the microphones, the “smiling preacher” lived up to his moniker. Even as he spoke of a five-year-old child (now known to be the shooter’s son) fighting for his life after being shot in the head, the trademark grin rarely flickered. To the discerning eye, it wasn’t the smile of a man comforted by the Holy Spirit; it was the polished, devilish mask of a brand manager protecting his interests.

While the smoke was still clearing from the hallway, Osteen’s message wasn’t one of repentance or the urgent need for a Savior. Instead, he spoke of “moving forward” and continuing with his “projects” to give “hope to the world.”

The Missing Name

In the critical moments when a global audience was watching, waiting for a word of eternal weight, the Name that is above every name was conspicuously absent from the core of his message. Mr. Preacher Man had a golden opportunity to point a terrified world to Jesus Christ, the only Prince of Peace. Instead, he offered a vague “God is in control” and a promise to “keep going strong.”

The Bible is clear about those who preach a gospel of comfort while ignoring the reality of sin and the necessity of the Cross:

“They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.” (Jeremiah 6:14)

Osteen’s “healing” is slight. It is a psychological band-aid on a spiritual hemorrhage. When a person is shot at your church, and your first instinct is to talk about your organization’s “resolve” and “projects” rather than the blood of Christ that cleanses from all sin, you have moved from being a shepherd to being a CEO.

The Forensic Verdict: A Brand, Not a Body

The forensic analysis of the Lakewood shooting response reveals a devastating truth: The “Prosperity Gospel” has no answer for real-world evil. It can only “move forward” by ignoring the gravity of the situation.

  • The Smile: A refusal to mourn with those who mourn (Romans 12:15).
  • The Silence: A failure to preach Christ crucified, which is the only true power of God (1 Corinthians 1:23-24).
  • The Focus: A devotion to the “project” of Lakewood rather than the person of Jesus.

Mr. Osteen, the world was watching. They saw the grin. They heard the talk of “moving forward.” But they didn’t hear about the Christ who died for the broken, the wicked, and the weary. You kept your brand intact, but you left the sheep hungry for the Bread of Life.
