For those who watch the times through the lens of Holy Writ, the restoration of the nation of Israel to her ancestral homeland stands as a staggering testament to the absolute veracity of God’s word. Yet, the daily reality of that sovereign state often presents a sharp, grinding friction to the believer. We see a society largely walking in secularism; we witness instances of religious extremism venting its fury against Christian witnesses in the streets of Jerusalem; we read of individuals bearing sacred heritage who choose instead to traffic in the modern industries of absolute defilement. It is a reality that makes a casual, worldly defense of the nation impossible in a hostile social square.
The error of the modern observer, however, lies in confusing God’s covenant with human righteousness. When the Almighty bound Himself to the seed of Abraham, He did not choose a people who were naturally holier, greater, or more compliant than the rest of the families of the earth. No, the scriptural record is an exhaustive, centuries-long chronicle of divine patience contending with human stiffneckedness. Moses made this reality transparently clear before the first border was ever crossed, declaring, “Understand therefore, that the Lord thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people” (Deuteronomy 9:6). The standard has never been the flawless behavior of the clay, but the unyielding faithfulness of the Potter.
Yet, a deeper, more profound prophetic mechanism is at work within the current status quo. By virtue of the protective shield established around the nation—a geopolitical bubble heavily reinforced by Western alliances—Israel today possesses something she has not enjoyed for millennia: absolute self-determination. They are no longer a scattered remnant hiding from the wrath of European czars, nor are they captives sitting by the rivers of Babylon weeping under the lash of an oppressive taskmaster. They sit within a secure perimeter, wielding sovereign legislative, military, and cultural authority.
With this absolute freedom comes a terrifying, ultimate accountability.
Historically, Israel’s deepest spiritual apostasies did not manifest during the lean years of adversity or the heavy years of bondage. The rot invariably set in when the perimeter was secure, the coffers were full, and human security allowed the heart to wander. It is the ancient warning of the Torah realized in our very sight: “But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness; then he forsook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation” (Deuteronomy 32:15).
Because they are sovereign in the land today, the cushion of the “victim narrative” has been entirely removed. Israel stands as a free moral agent before the courts of heaven. If the streets of Tel Aviv become a global capital for secular pride, it is by their own legislative pen. If radical factions abuse believers in the shadow of the Temple Mount, it happens under their own domestic watch. They can point the finger at no Roman governor, no pagan emperor, and no foreign occupier to excuse the moral temperature of their society. They do these offenses of their own free will, fully exposed before the law of God, which declares, “You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities” (Amos 3:2).
This total autonomy is not a detour from prophecy; it is the ultimate prerequisite for the climax of the age. If Israel were a broken, powerless people, the coming global deception would find no foothold. They must possess the sovereign power to choose their own alliances, to build their own institutions, and—ultimately—to sign that fatal, catastrophic covenant of false peace with the coming son of perdition. They must walk into that trap entirely of their own volition, with no earthly oppressor forcing their hand.
When the veil is finally ripped away at the end of the age, and the spirit of grace and supplications is poured out upon the house of David, the national grief will be so devastating precisely because the blame will lie entirely with them. They will realize that they had the land, they had the protection, they had the freedom, and yet they still disregarded the Stone that the builders rejected. In that great and terrible day of awakening, when they look upon Him whom they have pierced, the truth will stand bare before the universe: man’s protection gave them the freedom to do as they pleased, but only the Sovereign of Heaven could save them from themselves.
