The Stone of Patience

The Stone of Patience: Exploring the Prophetic Meaning of Ezel

The concept of a prophetic sign is often focused on grand visions or celestial events, but sometimes the most powerful signs are found in the subtle details of personal history and geography. One such story involves Jonathan, David, and a seemingly ordinary boundary marker known as the stone Ezel.

The Principle of the Mark

The setting is the moment when David, having been faithfully loyal to King Saul, realizes that Saul’s jealousy has crossed the point of no return. David and Jonathan, bound by an unbreakable covenant, devise a secret sign to determine David’s final fate.

Jonathan instructs David to hide by a specific geographical feature:

“And thou shalt be hid by the stone Ezel.” (1 Samuel 20:19, KJV)

The Hebrew word ′eˉzel (אֶזֶל) is highly significant. It literally means “departure,” “going away,” or “boundary.” This stone was a known landmark that marked a point of final separation.

The Prophecy of Departure

The sign Jonathan uses is complex, involving the shooting of arrows and a coded message to his servant. However, the message itself is a declaration of irreversible judgment and final departure:

“And Jonathan cried after the lad, and said, Is not the arrow beyond thee? And Jonathan cried after the lad, Make speed, haste, stay not.” (1 Samuel 20:37, KJV)

When Jonathan says the arrow is “beyond” the servant, it is the coded signal to David that his life is forfeit, and his final, permanent departure (the meaning of Ezel) must be immediate.

Ezel as a Prophetic Marker

The Stone of Ezel serves as a profound metaphor for the prophetic principle of God’s patience reaching its limit, directly connecting to the timing of The Lord’s Return:

  1. The Point of No Return: The stone marks the precise moment when the opportunity for reconciliation ends and irreversible judgment begins. Saul’s rejection of God’s Law and his hatred of God’s anointed successor had reached the boundary marked by Ezel.
  2. The Final Covenant Sign: Jonathan and David’s covenant was one of true faithfulness. The sign of Ezel demonstrated that despite their love, the finality of Saul’s apostasy demanded separation. This parallels the final separation between the faithful and the wicked at the end of the age.
  3. God’s Final Patience: The Stone of Ezel symbolically represents the final boundary of God’s longsuffering patience. For a time, God waits, seeking repentance. But just as Jonathan’s final arrow signaled that “there is danger,” the prophetic signs of the last days signal that God’s patience is at its limit and that the great and final departure—the return of Christ and the separation of the nations—is imminent.

The Stone of Ezel is a silent, enduring testament to the truth that every era, every life, and every prophetic season has a defined boundary, and once that line is crossed, the departure and the subsequent judgment are final.
