The Subtle Erosion of Scripture—The Quiet Precursor to Apostasy
The foundation of the Christian faith is under a sustained and subtle attack. It is not an attack on stained glass windows or church attendance, but on the very authority of the Holy Bible.
Apostasy—the “falling away” from the faith—is not a sudden crisis; it is a gradual erosion. It begins the moment believers accept the adversary’s ancient whisper: “Yea, hath God said?” (Genesis 3:1, KJV). Once the integrity of Scripture is compromised, the path to abandoning the Lord who gave it becomes clear and dangerously easy.
The defense of the Lord’s return, and the truth itself, depends on an uncompromising defense of the Word of God.
The Three Fronts of Attack
The modern assault against the Bible is designed to move it from being inerrant (without error) to irrelevant. These are the critical areas where the Scripture is being undermined today:
1. Attacking Divine Inspiration
Many today, even within religious institutions, treat the Bible as a flawed, human document, denying the truth that “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine…” (II Timothy 3:16, KJV). By denying its divine origin, its power to correct and define truth is neutralized. The Word of God is demoted to the opinion of man.
2. Rejecting Historical Truth
Key biblical accounts—from the six-day Creation to the historical miracles—are often dismissed as allegories or myths to satisfy secular science. The consequence is devastating: If we cannot trust the Bible’s account of the physical world, how can we trust its message of eternal salvation? The entire reliability of the Gospel is called into question.
3. Compromising Moral Authority
The most visible attack involves rejecting clear biblical commands on morality and sin simply because they conflict with current societal trends. When cultural philosophy replaces the Bible as the standard, the human heart becomes the judge of the Word, rather than the other way around. This opens the door to lawlessness, as we are warned: “and many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.” (Matthew 24:11, KJV).
Apostasy: The Inevitable Outcome
The Bible is the only authoritative anchor for the Christian soul. When its authority is cut, there is nothing left to hold the church in place. The Apostle Paul prophesied that a “falling away” must precede the Lord’s return (II Thessalonians 2:3, KJV).
This erosion of Scripture is the most active precursor to that great apostasy. When the authority of the Word is lost, the vacuum is quickly filled by the “seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils” (I Timothy 4:1, KJV) that are clearly seen deceiving the masses today.
We are called to heed the command to “Contend earnestly for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.” (Jude 1:3, KJV). That defense begins by standing firm on every single word of the Bible as the unchanging, authoritative truth of the living God.
