Who Was Abitub?

A Link in the Lineage of Benjamin

Abitub is a figure mentioned in the Old Testament solely within the genealogical records of the tribe of Benjamin. While the Scriptures provide no account of his personal deeds or exploits, his name is preserved as a link in the meticulous recording of Israel’s tribal heritage.

Identity and Lineage

Abitub is identified as a descendant of Benjamin, one of the twelve sons of Jacob (Israel). His place in the genealogy is established in the book of Chronicles.

The King James Version states his parentage in the context of Shaharaim’s family:

“And of Hushim he begat Abitub, and Elpaal.” (1 Chronicles 8:11, KJV)

From this verse, it is understood that Abitub was a son of Shaharaim by his wife, Hushim. He is listed with his brother, Elpaal. This lineage places Abitub within the complex, preserved family records that trace the descendants of the Benjamites.

The meaning of the name Abitub in the Hebrew tongue is generally understood to be “father of goodness” or “my father is good(ness).” His inclusion in the text serves the Chronicler’s primary purpose of documenting the continuity of the covenant people and the integrity of the tribal inheritances after the return from exile. Abitub represents one small, yet essential, piece of the genealogical tapestry that underpins the history of Israel
