Who Was Aholibah (Oholiban)?

“Oholiban” is a slight variant or typo for Oholibah (rendered as Aholibah in the King James Version)

The prophetic weight of Ezekiel’s warnings reaches its absolute climax in the tragic personification of Aholibah, a name translating from the Hebrew to mean “my tabernacle is in her.” While her sister Oholah represented the Northern Kingdom of Samaria, which fell into swift captivity due to her early compromises, Aholibah is revealed under the perfect inspiration of the Holy Spirit as the Southern Kingdom of Judah, with her capital centered at Jerusalem. Her name carries a devastating theological irony; unlike her sister who built her own unauthorized altars, Aholibah was the actual custodian of the true, divinely sanctioned temple where the glory of the Lord physically dwelt. This structural privilege, however, only amplified the depth of her spiritual treachery when she turned away from the ancient paths.

The historical indictment leveled against her is recorded with striking severity in Ezekiel 23:11, where the prophet notes, “And when her sister Aholibah saw this, she was more corrupt in her inordinate love than she, and in her whoredoms more than her sister in her whoredoms.” Having witnessed the total collapse and Assyrian captivity of the Northern Kingdom as a direct consequence of idolatry, Jerusalem did not take warning. Instead, she chose to deepen her geopolitical and spiritual integration with the pagan world, looking past Assyria to dote upon the rising imperial luxury and military might of the Babylonians. Instead of walking in uncompromised mission and relying solely upon the defense of the Almighty, Aholibah weaponized her foreign policy, polluting the holy courts with the styles, practices, and false deities of the surrounding empires.

The inevitable consequence of this institutional betrayal was a righteous ledger of judgment that matched her crime. Because she forgot her true Husband and cast His law behind her back, the Lord delivered her directly into the hands of the very political powers she doted upon. The prophetic text details this total collapse, declaring in Ezekiel 23:22, “Therefore, O Aholibah, thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will raise up thy lovers against thee, from whom thy mind is alienated, and I will bring them against thee on every side.” The very Babylonians she sought for security marched against her walls, plundered her treasures, and left her completely desolate. Her historic ruin stands as a permanent, chilling monument to the truth that great spiritual privilege demands absolute physical obedience, serving as an enduring warning that those who compromise the truth to gain the favor of a corrupt world will eventually be destroyed by the very systems they trusted.

“And they shall deal with thee hatefully, and shall take away all thy labour, and shall leave thee naked and bare: and the nakedness of thy whoredoms shall be discovered, both thy lewdness and thy whoredoms.” — Ezekiel 23:29
