Who Was Benaiah?

The Lion-Slayer and Faithful Executioner

Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, was far more than a name in a genealogy; he was a powerhouse of valor, an essential pillar in the courts of both King David and King Solomon. His life stands as a testament to exceptional courage, unflinching loyalty, and the righteous use of power in defense of God’s anointed kingship.

The Heroic Deeds of a Mighty Man

Benaiah originated from Kabzeel in Judah and was one of David’s Mighty Men, a select group of elite warriors. The scripture dedicates specific verses to chronicling his legendary exploits, placing him as “more honourable than the thirty” (2 Samuel 23:23, KJV). His deeds were not merely acts of war but incredible displays of single-handed courage:

  1. Slaying the Lion in the Pit:“And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man, of Kabzeel, who had done many acts, he slew two lionlike men of Moab: he went down also and slew a lion in the midst of a pit in time of snow:” (2 Samuel 23:20, KJV). The image of Benaiah descending into a pit in a snowstorm to confront and kill a fearsome lion encapsulates his audacious bravery against overwhelming odds. This act speaks to a faith that faces danger head-on, even when the environment itself is hostile.
  2. Defeating the Egyptian Giant:“And he slew an Egyptian, a goodly man: and the Egyptian had a spear in his hand; but he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and slew him with his own spear.” (2 Samuel 23:21, KJV). Armed only with a simple staff, Benaiah engaged a heavily armed Egyptian giant and defeated him using the giant’s own weapon. This echoes the victory of David over Goliath, demonstrating that the Lord often uses the humble to confound the mighty.

Commander of the Guard

King David recognized Benaiah’s exceptional character and loyalty, placing him in a position of supreme trust: commander over the Cherethites and the Pelethites (2 Samuel 8:18, KJV). This elite group served as David’s personal bodyguard and were responsible for the immediate security of the royal family. Benaiah’s position placed him at the heart of the kingdom’s power structure.

Loyalty to Solomon and the Royal Succession

Benaiah’s faithfulness was perhaps most critically displayed during the turbulent transition of power from David to Solomon. When David’s older son Adonijah attempted to seize the throne illegally, Benaiah remained steadfastly loyal to God’s chosen successor, Solomon (1 Kings 1:8, KJV).

His loyalty earned him the highest military position under Solomon. When Joab, David’s former commander, was executed for his past treacheries and support of Adonijah, Solomon appointed Benaiah in his stead:

“So Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he fell upon him that he died. And the king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his room over the host: and Zadok the priest did the king put in the room of Abiathar.” (1 Kings 2:34-35, KJV).

In this role, Benaiah was charged with carrying out Solomon’s righteous judgment against the traitors who sought to destabilize the newly established kingdom, including Adonijah, Joab, and Shimei.

A Lesson in Unwavering Faith

Benaiah, the lion-slayer and faithful servant, provides a powerful example for the believer. His life demonstrates that true strength comes not just from physical ability, but from unwavering faithfulness to the rightful King, whether facing a wild beast in a pit or executing the lawful commands of the one appointed by God. His reward was promotion and honor, a biblical illustration of the principle: “He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much” (Luke 16:10, KJV).
