Who Was Bunah?

A Son in the Royal Lineage of Judah

The genealogies of the tribe of Judah are the most crucial in Scripture, for it is through this tribe that the royal line of David and the promised Messiah would descend. Bunah is one of the names meticulously preserved in these records, ensuring the accuracy and continuity of this foundational lineage.

Bunah in the Lineage of Jerahmeel

Bunah is found in the Book of First Chronicles within the family record of Jerahmeel, the elder brother of Caleb (the son of Hezron). This places Bunah as a descendant of Hezron, one of the sons of Pharez, the son of Judah.

Bunah is listed as one of the four sons of Jerahmeel:

“And the sons of Jerahmeel the firstborn of Hezron were Ram, and Bunah, and Oren, and Ozem, and Ahijah.” (1 Chronicles 2:25, KJV)

His inclusion in this list confirms the historical continuation of this powerful and extensive clan within the tribe of Judah. While his brother Ram is key to the Messianic line (as an ancestor of David), Bunah’s branch ensured the overall strength and numbers of Judah’s descendants.

The Significance of His Name

The Hebrew name Bunah ($\text{בּוּנָה}$, Bûnâh) is generally understood to mean “Discretion” or “Prudence.”

This meaning is a subtle but important commentary on the family. During the tumultuous periods chronicled in the Bible, the survival and prosperity of a powerful clan depended not only on wealth and strength but also on wise counsel and prudent action.

Bunah’s name, meaning “Prudence,” may reflect a quality desired or displayed in his life, or it may simply serve as an enduring reminder to his descendants that wise judgment is critical for preserving one’s inheritance and standing in the community.

Bunah and the Preservation of the Line

Like many figures whose sole mention is in a genealogy, Bunah’s importance lies in his very existence and the faithfulness of the biblical record.

  1. Historical Validation: The names of Jerahmeel’s sons, including Bunah, were necessary to account for the numerous families and cities that stemmed from them in the land of Judah. This level of detail validates the historical reality upon which the covenant is built.
  2. Continuity of Promise: Bunah stands as a faithful link in the extensive chain of Judah. The preservation of his name, even as a lateral branch, contributes to the overall stability and growth of the tribe chosen by God to bear the sceptre of rule (Genesis 49:10, KJV), leading to the final fulfillment of prophecy in Jesus Christ, the Lion of the tribe of Judah.
