Who Was Hepher?

In the sacred genealogies and the distribution of the promised inheritance, the name Hepher is found among the lineages of the faithful, representing both a son of Judah and a foundational house in the tribe of Manasseh. These accounts serve as a defense of the truth that God keeps His covenant with the families who stand fast in their identity as His people.

The first Hepher is recorded as a son of Ashur, of the tribe of Judah: “And Naarah bare him Ahuzam, and Hepher, and Temeni, and Haahashtari. These were the sons of Naarah” (1 Chronicles 4:6). Though the record is brief, his inclusion in the lineage of the kings of Judah marks him as part of the messianic line, a witness to the unfolding plan of the Lord’s return through the ages.

The second Hepher, a son of Gilead and grandson of Manasseh, became the patriarch of a significant clan during the wilderness journey. It is written, “And the of Gilead: of Ieezer, the family of the Ieezerites: of Helek, the family of the Helekites: and of Asriel, the family of the Asrielites: and of Shechem, the family of the Shechemites: And of Shemida, the family of the Shemidaites: and of Hepher, the family of the Hepherites” (Numbers 26:30-32).

However, the legacy of Hepher is perhaps most renowned for his son, Zelophehad, who died without sons. His five daughters stood before Moses with unwavering conviction to claim their father’s portion, demonstrating that the inheritance of the Lord is for all who believe and obey. “Now Zelophehad the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but daughters: and these are the names of his daughters, Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah” (Numbers 27:1).

A third Hepher is listed among the mighty men of David, those valiant soldiers who defended the anointed of the Lord against political and physical pressures: “Hepher the Mecherathite, Ahijah the Pelonite” (1 Chronicles 11:36). Whether as a patriarch or a warrior, the men of this name illustrate that the King is at the door, and His reward is with Him for those who remain uncompromised in their mission.
