The name Jehucal, which signifies “the Lord is able,” identifies a man who stood at the intersection of political desperation and the prophetic truth during the final, tumultuous days of the kingdom of Judah. His life serves as a stark reminder of the futility of human influence when it is used to suppress the word of the Lord, especially in the face of impending national judgment.
Jehucal, also known as Jucal, was the son of Shelemiah. He served as a high-ranking official in the court of King Zedekiah, the last king of Judah. His position of influence is evidenced by the fact that the king sent him, along with the priest Zephaniah, to the prophet Jeremiah with a desperate plea: “Pray now unto the Lord our God for us.” This mission occurred during the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem, as the reality of the city’s destruction began to loom over the leadership (Jeremiah 37:3).
However, the actions of Jehucal shortly thereafter reveal the true posture of the royal court. He was among the princes who, hearing the message of Jeremiah—which declared that the city would be delivered into the hands of the king of Babylon—approached the king to demand the prophet’s death. They argued that Jeremiah’s words were weakening the hands of the men of war and the people, and they eventually succeeded in having the prophet cast into a dungeon, hoping to silence the unwelcome truth (Jeremiah 38:1–4).
The story of Jehucal is a cautionary tale regarding the misuse of power. While he bore a name that proclaimed the Lord’s ability, his actions demonstrated a profound lack of trust in that very ability. He chose to rely on political maneuvering and the intimidation of the Lord’s messenger rather than humbling himself before the warning given. He serves as a representative of those who hold positions of authority but lack the spiritual courage to align themselves with the word of the Lord when that word contradicts their own strategies for survival.
