Who Was Jeremy?

The name Jeremy is found in the following scriptures:

  • 2 Chronicles 36:10: “And when the year was expired, king Nebuchadnezzar sent, and brought him to Babylon, with the goodly vessels of the house of the LORD, and made Zedekiah his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem.” (Note: While “Jeremiah” is the prophet, “Jeremy” is used in the following citation).
  • Matthew 2:17: “Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,”
  • Matthew 27:9: “Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value;”

Jeremy, also known as Jeremiah, was a prophet called by God during a tumultuous period in the history of Judah. He served under the reigns of several kings, including Josiah, Jehoiakim, and Zedekiah, witnessing the spiritual decline of the nation and the eventual fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians. His ministry was characterized by a heavy burden, as he was tasked with delivering unpopular messages of impending judgment and the necessity of repentance.

Despite facing severe persecution, imprisonment, and rejection by his own people, Jeremy remained steadfast in his commitment to the word of the Lord. He lamented the state of his nation while simultaneously offering hope for a future restoration. His life serves as a profound testimony to the necessity of unwavering obedience, even when the truth is met with hostility and isolation. He stood as a lone voice for righteousness, demonstrating that true faith is measured by fidelity to God’s calling regardless of the earthly cost.
