Who Was Kislon?

In the season of the wilderness wanderings, as the children of Israel prepared to enter the land of promise, we encounter the name of Kislon. He was a prince and a father of the tribe of Benjamin, a man chosen for a task of immense geographical and spiritual significance. As the nation stood on the threshold of their inheritance, the Almighty directed that specific men be appointed to oversee the division of the land. The scripture records his appointment: “Of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad the son of Chislon” (Numbers 34:21).

Kislon, rendered as Chislon in the authorized text, was a man of the “Ancient Paths” who lived during the transition from the nomadic life of the desert to the settled life of the kingdom. His name, which suggests “confidence” or “hope,” reflects the spirit of a generation that looked toward the fulfillment of the oath made to Abraham. While Kislon himself belonged to the generation of the wilderness, his legacy was realized through his son, Elidad, who stood as a representative of Benjamin before Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun.

The role of Kislon’s household in the “Defence of the Truth” was one of physical obedience to the divine blueprint. The division of the land was not a matter of chance but a sacred procedure conducted by lot and overseen by men of integrity. Kislon provided the foundation for a son who would ensure that every family in Benjamin received their God-ordained portion. He represents the steady, patriarchal strength that characterized the tribal leadership of Israel—men who maintained order and faith so that the next generation could possess their possessions.

We look back upon Kislon with an admiring eye, recognizing him as a pillar of the Benjamite heritage. Though his name appears but once in the sacred record, it is etched into the “Forensic Analysis” of Israel’s foundational documents. He reminds us that the King’s work requires men of confidence and stability, those who can raise up heirs capable of handling the weight of an inheritance. Kislon was a guardian of the hope of Israel, a man whose lineage helped map the very ground upon which the tribe of the Apostle Paul would one day walk.
