Mattatha was a prince of Israel who lived during the early centuries of the divided kingdom. He was the son of Nathan, and the grandson of King David himself. While his uncle, King Solomon, inherited the visible, earthly throne of Jerusalem and led the nation into massive material prosperity—and eventually, deep spiritual compromise—Mattatha’s branch of the family tree remained in comparative obscurity, tucked away from the immediate political turmoil of the Judean monarchy.
Though bypassed by the temporal, legal succession of the kings of Judah, Mattatha’s lineage was chosen by the Almighty for a far higher, spiritual purpose. While the line of Solomon eventually became disqualified from producing an earthly ruler due to the divine curse placed upon King Jeconiah (Coniah) centuries later, the line of Nathan remained untainted.
It is through Mattatha’s direct bloodline that Mary, the virgin mother of Jesus, traces her ancestry back to the sweet psalmist of Israel. Mattatha stands as an essential biological link ensuring that the Lord Jesus Christ was the literal, physical “seed of David according to the flesh” (Romans 1:3).
The Holy Spirit has eternally secured Mattatha’s identity and ancestral position within the grand New Testament genealogy preserved in the Gospel of Luke:
“Which was the son of Melea, which was the son of Menan, which was the son of Mattatha, which was the son of Nathan, which was the son of David,” (Luke 3:31)
Through Mattatha, the scripture demonstrates that God’s thoughts are not our thoughts, nor are His ways our ways. While the world watched the dramatic rise and fall of Solomon’s crown, the Lord was quietly preserving a hidden line of descent through Mattatha. This line would endure the dark centuries of the Babylonian exile and the long silence of the intertestamental years, ultimately emerging in the fullness of time to bring forth the Savior of the world—proclaiming that the truest gifts of God are often hidden from the eyes of men until the day of their sovereign deployment.
