Who Was Mikneiah?

The Levitical Musician and Gatekeeper of the Ark

Mikneiah was a Levite of the second degree appointed to a critical spiritual and operational post when King David brought the Ark of the Covenant from the house of Obed-edom to its permanent resting place in the City of David.

When David commanded the chief Levites to organize the singers and musicians with instruments of music, Mikneiah was selected for dual responsibilities: he was both an elite instrumentalist and a gatekeeper tasked with securing the sacred thresholds.

The King James Version documents his specific appointment in 1 Chronicles 15:18: “And with them their brethren of the second degree, Zachariah, Ben, and Jaaziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, Eliab, and Benaiah, and Maaseiah, and Mattithiah, and Elipheleh, and Mikneiah, and Obed-edom, and Jeiel, the porters.”

As the grand procession moved, Mikneiah executed his musical ministry. He played a harp (kinnor) tuned to the Sheminith—a musical term indicating the eighth or lowest octave, designed to give the melodies a deep, resonant, and solemn tone. 1 Chronicles 15:21 notes: “And Mattithiah, and Elipheleh, and Mikneiah, and Obed-edom, and Jeiel, and Azaziah, with harps on the Sheminith to excel.”

Mikneiah’s role required exact physical obedience and spiritual reverence. Standing as a guard of the gates while simultaneously raising a deep bass layer of praise, he helped ensure that the entry of the Lord’s presence into Jerusalem was executed with absolute order and majesty.
