Who Was Misham?

The Pioneer and City Builder of Benjamin

Misham was a notable head of a family within the tribe of Benjamin. His lineage and physical achievements are preserved in 1 Chronicles 8, a chapter dedicated to documenting the regional rulers, military captains, and genealogical anchors of the Benjamite territory.

Misham was one of the three sons born to Elpaal. The King James Version documents his exact placement in the lineage, alongside his brothers and their historical exploits, in 1 Chronicles 8:12:

“The sons of Elpaal; Eber, and Misham, and Shamed, who built Ono, and Lod, with the towns thereof:”

While no specific spoken words are recorded for Misham, his corporate legacy is one of aggressive territorial expansion and physical construction. Following the early tribal disruptions in the land of Canaan, Misham and his brothers pioneered the development of two strategic cities: Lod (which became Lydda in the New Testament era) and Ono.

This was not merely an architectural feat, but an act of strategic occupation. By building these cities and their surrounding frontier towns, Misham helped secure the western foothills of Israel’s territory, establishing permanent defensive and economic strongholds that survived through centuries of warfare and even into the post-exilic restoration period. His name stands as a verified pillar of tribal inheritance and physical industry.
