Who Was Rebekah?

The unfolding blueprint of redemptive history relies explicitly upon the structural continuity of the covenant lineage, choosing specific individuals through whom the promise of the holy seed would be structurally maintained. Standing as a central, fiercely resolute matriarch within this divine economy is Rebekah (transliterated in the New Testament as Rebecca), a name translating from the ancient tongue to signify “captivating,” “snare,” or “firmly bound.” Her identity as the chosen bride of Isaac and the mother of Jacob is documented under the perfect inspiration of the Holy Spirit, remaining an uncompromised monument to sovereign election and physical obedience.

Rebekah first enters the structural record in Genesis 24:15 as she approaches a well outside the city of Nahor with her pitcher upon her shoulder. Abraham had dispatched his chief servant, Eliezer, on a high-stakes mission to find a bride for Isaac from among his own kindred, praying for a specific sign of hospitality. Rebekah did not merely offer the servant a drink; she immediately put her faith into strenuous, physical action, drawing water for all ten of his camels until they finished drinking—a massive labor that demonstrated her exceptional character and vigor.

Upon recognizing the hand of the Almighty, Eliezer bestowed upon her gold ornaments and requested lodging. When her brother Laban and her father Bethuel heard the testimony of how the Lord had guided the mission, they recognized the divine decree. When asked if she would immediately leave her homeland to journey to an unknown land, Rebekah answered with uncompromised, immediate decision in Genesis 24:58: “And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go.”

Upon arriving in Canaan, she became the cherished wife of Isaac. Like Sarah before her, Rebekah faced the crucible of a barren womb for twenty years. Isaac pleaded with the Lord on her behalf, and the sovereign Creator answered, granting her a difficult pregnancy with twin sons. When she inquired of the Lord regarding the violent struggling within her womb, the Almighty delivered a foundational, programmatic prophecy concerning the two nations she carried, recorded in Genesis 25:23:

“And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.” — Genesis 25:23

This divine revelation shaped Rebekah’s actions during the ultimate crisis of her household. When an aged Isaac prepared to bypass the oracle of God by bestowing the patriarchal blessing upon the profane, worldly Esau, Rebekah intervened. Recognizing that the spiritual heritage of Abraham could not be compromised, she engineered a tactical plan for Jacob to secure the blessing, clothing him in Esau’s garments and preparing the meat. While human critics focus on the deception, the scripture frames her actions as a fierce, defensive intervention to enforce the original word of the Lord.

The permanent preservation of Rebekah in the master ledger of Genesis stands as a firm testament to the absolute precision of the divine record. In the New Testament, the apostle Paul explicitly cites her pregnancy in Romans 9:10-12 as the ultimate theological proof text for the doctrine of sovereign election, noting that the decree stood before the children were even born or had done any good or evil. She died in the faith and was buried alongside Isaac in the cave of Machpelah (Genesis 49:31), leaving an uncompromised legacy as a mother of Israel who actively guarded the covenant line.
