Who Was Sheariah?

The systematic tracing of the lineage of King Saul within the post-exilic records highlights the absolute structural fidelity of the tribe of Benjamin. Sheariah emerges within these meticulous genealogical frameworks as a prominent royal descendant who preserved the ancestral line of Israel’s first monarch through generations of national upheaval and exile.

We encounter Sheariah within the detailed registers that document the household of Azel, a direct descendant of Saul through Jonathan’s son Mephibosheth (also called Merib-baal). The scripture records his identity and immediate family directly: “And Azel had six sons, whose names are these, Azrikam, Bocheru, and Ishmael, and Sheariah, and Obadiah, and Hanan. All these were the sons of Azel” (1 Chronicles 8:38). This exact genealogical ledger is repeated with identical structural precision in the following chapter to ensure the flawless continuity of the record: “And Azel had six sons, whose names are these, Azrikam, Bocheru, and Ishmael, and Sheariah, and Obadiah, and Hanan: these were the sons of Azel” (1 Chronicles 9:44).

The historical weight of Sheariah’s position is underscored by the status given to his family line. As part of the noble house of Saul, his lineage represented a significant branch of the Benjamite aristocracy. Even after the kingdom was permanently transferred to the house of David, and after the devastating decades of the Babylonian captivity, the preservation of Sheariah’s name demonstrates that God did not allow this historic family to be blotted out or forgotten.

Sheariah represents those stable, hidden pillars of the restoration era who maintained their identity and documented their heritage with absolute care. By keeping his lineage uncompromised and ensuring his place within the sacred registry, he helped provide the returning remnant with a clear, verified connection to the foundational history of the nation.
