Who Was Shenazzar?

The name Shenazzar, which suggests “Sin [the moon god] protects,” serves as a historical reminder of the Babylonian influence surrounding the royal house of David during the era of the exile. Yet, despite the foreign linguistic root, Shenazzar is recorded in the lineage of the kings of Judah. He stands as a figure of the transition between the fallen monarchy and the post-exilic restoration, a man who lived in the shadow of the great collapse but remained within the preserved genealogical register of the royal house.

We encounter Shenazzar within the meticulously documented records of the Chronicler, which trace the royal seed through the difficult years of the Babylonian displacement. The scripture identifies his place within the royal family: “And the sons of Jeconiah; Assir, Salathiel his son, Malchiram also, and Pedaiah, and Shenazzar, Jekamiah, Hoshama, and Nedabiah” (1 Chronicles 3:17–18). As a son of King Jeconiah—the king who was carried away into captivity—Shenazzar was born into a world where the throne of David had been overturned, yet his name remains in the holy record as evidence that the royal line was not extinguished.

Shenazzar represents the royal survivors—the princes of the house of David who, though deprived of their crown and kingdom, were kept by the providence of the Lord. His inclusion in the sacred archives is a testament to the preservation of the Davidic lineage, which remained the vessel through which the promise of the Messiah would ultimately be fulfilled. By his presence in the register, Shenazzar is confirmed as one of the many links in the chain that connected the glory of the monarchy to the humble beginnings of the remnant that would eventually return to Jerusalem.
