Who Was Shimeah?

The name Shimeah, a variant spelling often associated with the name Shimea, appears in the scriptures to identify two notable figures, both of whom are intimately connected to the royal house of David.

The first Shimeah was a brother of King David. He was the son of Jesse, often known by the alternative spelling Shimma or Shammah (1 Samuel 16:9; 2 Samuel 13:3). As one of the elder brothers who passed before the prophet Samuel, he was a man of stature whom the prophet initially considered, yet the Lord looked past the outward appearance to choose the youngest of the brothers, David. He is later remembered for his son Jonadab, a man described as very subtil, who advised David’s son Amnon in a dark and tragic chapter of the royal family’s history (2 Samuel 13:3-5).

The second Shimeah mentioned is also a member of the royal line, identified as a son of David (1 Chronicles 8:39). In the chronicles of the tribes, particularly in the records concerning the house of Saul and the lineage of the Benjamites, the name appears within the complex descent of the royal families. This Shimeah reflects the intertwining of these prominent lines as they solidified their place in the history of the nation.

These men, linked by name and by their close proximity to the throne, serve as a reminder of the human element within the story of Israel’s monarchy. They were part of the family dynamics, the political tensions, and the generational shifts that characterized the house of David. Their presence in the records highlights the importance of the family unit in the unfolding of God’s plan, showing how even the brothers and descendants of the king were part of the broader tapestry of the kingdom.
