Who Was Shitrai?

Shitrai is identified in the Chronicles as a Sharonite, a man of specialized oversight within the vast administrative infrastructure established by King David. His name is recorded among the royal stewards who managed the king’s abundant resources, specifically tasked with the care of the herds that grazed in the plain of Sharon (1 Chronicles 27:29).

His role provides a detailed look at the meticulous organization that governed the kingdom during a season of unprecedented stability. The inclusion of Shitrai in the royal registry—alongside others who oversaw the olive trees, the vineyards, and the various livestock—demonstrates that the management of the land was viewed as a sacred stewardship. Each steward was responsible for ensuring the productivity and security of the wealth that God had entrusted to the nation, an essential function that kept the resources of the kingdom ordered and efficient.

Though the scriptures provide no further narrative of his life, the presence of his name in the chronicle serves as a witness to the value placed on those who serve in the “background” of the kingdom’s history. Shitrai did not lead armies into battle, nor did he prophesy in the courts; he served in the fields of Sharon. Yet, his diligent stewardship of the king’s herds contributed to the overall strength and provisioning of the throne.

In the economy of the Kingdom of God, there is no service that is considered menial when it is performed with excellence and in accordance with the king’s mandate. Shitrai’s record reminds us that the success of a mission is often built upon the quiet, consistent labor of those who remain faithful to their specific post, ensuring that the resources of the Lord’s house are well-tended and ready for use.
