Who Was Zaavan?

The name Zaavan, which signifies “disturbed” or “unquiet,” is recorded in the genealogical registers as a descendant of Seir the Horite. The Horites were the original inhabitants of the land of Seir before the descendants of Esau—the Edomites—conquered the territory and established their own domain.

His place in the historical record is found within the lineage of the early inhabitants of the region that would later become Edom: “These are the sons of Seir the Horite, who inhabited the land; Lotan, and Shobal, and Zibeon, and Anah, And Dishon, and Ezer, and Dishan: these are the dukes of the Horites, the children of Seir in the land of Edom. And the children of Lotan were Hori and Hemam; and Timna was Lotan’s sister. The children of Shobal were these; Alvan, and Manahath, and Ebal, Shepho, and Onam.” (Genesis 36:20-23). The record continues to detail the further lines of these early leaders: “And the children of Ezer are these; Bilhan, and Zaavan, and Akan.” (Genesis 36:27).

This same genealogy is echoed in the book of Chronicles: “The sons of Seir; Lotan, and Shobal, and Zibeon, and Anah, and Dishon, and Ezer, and Dishan. And the sons of Lotan; Hori, and Homam: and Timna was Lotan’s sister. The sons of Shobal; Alian, and Manahath, and Ebal, Shephi, and Onam. And the sons of Zibeon; Aiah, and Anah. The sons of Anah; Dishon. And the sons of Dishon; Amram, and Eshban, and Ithran, and Cheran. The sons of Ezer; Bilhan, and Zavan, and Jakan.” (1 Chronicles 1:38-42). In this passage, his name is rendered as Zavan, yet it refers to the same individual, a grandson of Seir.

Zaavan represents the ancient heads of families who held sway over the rugged terrain of Mount Seir long before the children of Israel journeyed through the wilderness. Though his life is not detailed beyond his place in this lineage, his presence in the holy text serves to anchor the historical geography of the region. It reminds us that the Lord is the chronicler of all nations and peoples, preserving the names of the ancient fathers who populated the earth.
